Sustainability Program Builds Confidence — Rob Kiss, Chair, Environmental Research Committee

3/13/2017

Until it’s written down, it’s just a concept. To that end, almond growers and processors who participate in the California Almond Sustainability Program (CASP) help the whole industry by providing documented data to educate buyers, regulators and the public about how we are following sustainable1 practices and are considerate of neighbors and the consuming public.

And that’s exactly how Donny Hicks, a field representative for Hughson Nut, Inc., responds when asked about his support of the program after filling out all eight modules of the CASP assessments.

He informs his growers that almond buyers often want detailed information about how almonds are grown and what almond growers are doing to protect the environment.

At the same time, the sustainability program is an opportunity for growers and processors to reflect on the management of their operations, and evaluate how their practices compare with those used across the industry.

Check out Donny’s story in this issue. Also, I encourage you to attend an upcoming CASP workshop and complete a module at the event or online at SustainableAlmondGrowing.org.

Sincerely,

Rob Kiss, Chair
Environmental Research Committee
