For more than two decades, Almond Board of California (ABC) has invested in sound science to better understand the nutrient composition and health benefits of almonds, and also to advance public health and wellness. Investment to date totals more than $22.9 million, with 96 projects funded. Current areas of research include heart health, weight management and satiety, diabetes, cognition and gut health.
Nutrition research in North America, Europe and Asia adds to the existing body of more than 138 published papers on almond science, which are shared globally to communicate the health benefits of almonds and how they fit into healthy dietary patterns. At the Nutrition Research Committee strategic planning meeting in November, the committee prioritized funding additional international research, partnering with universities in Korea, Taiwan, India, Australia and several countries in Europe. This research will provide important insights into almond health benefits within specific populations and allow ABC to provide more relevant health information to food and health professionals and consumers in those areas of the world.
