Cleaning Bulk Bins for Food Safety

8/10/2016

While clean bin liners are helpful, keep in mind that during storage in the off season, bulk bins are likely to be contaminated by rodents, birds, insects, trash and other sources. Bin liners do a good job of protecting the product, but when bins are picked up and turned upside down for emptying, the liner may fall out, along with any animal and bird droppings remaining in the bins, landing in the hopper along with the almonds.

Cleaning and sanitizing bulk bins should take place in time for them to dry before being used at harvest.

A good cleaning removes these potential contaminants and is an important food-safety step.

To prevent contamination from this source, sanitize bins in early August as follows:

  • Tip bins upside down and clean with a pressure washer.
  • Use clean, potable water and add a sanitizer as an extra precaution.
  • Clean the bins outside to avoid spreading contaminants.
  • Allow the bins to dry in the sun.
  • Always use a liner.
