While the media focus on water usage by almond growers has decreased, the importance of telling our sustainability1 story continues with an increased focus. Consumers and customers in the United States and around the world want to know the truth about our practices.
The Almond Board has a tremendous tool to help tell our sustainability story: the California Almond Sustainability Program (CASP). CASP was instrumental in combating the wave of misinformation about water efficiency that we all remember from the past year. CASP uses a self-assessment process to document the practices growers use to produce their crops. This module-based program details the collective best management practices used by participating growers throughout the Central Valley. Information provided by CASP participants has already helped change the narrative about almonds and water, and will continue to quantify the sustainability efforts of the industry.
I ask all growers and handlers to get involved with CASP and help spread the word of the good practices you all employ. As George Washington said, “Truth will ultimately prevail where there are pains to bring it to light.”
Sincerely,
