Almond Leadership Program: Mentor Spotlight – Q&A with April Nuckles

9/26/2024

April Nuckles, Strategic Account Manager at Vestaron and three-year ALP Mentor.

Q. How are you involved in the almond industry?
A. As a strategic account manager, I represent an insecticide, Spear Lep, which combats Navel Orangeworm. In my role, I work with growers, independent PCAs and retail PCAs in the Southern Valley by providing product support. Working with almond growers and PCAs is a big part of my role and helping them solve their problems with navel orangeworm with our product is rewarding. Prior to working here, I worked for large almond growers as a purchaser of chemical and fertilizer while supporting operations and harvest.

Q. How did you get involved with the Almond Leadership Program and how many years have you been involved as a mentor?
A. I learned about Almond Leadership through a colleague, Brennon Christopher, who was in the program and he suggested I apply. I was in the 2019 class (the one that has raised the most money for FFA scholarships) and have been a mentor for 3 years.

Q. What is your favorite part of being a mentor in Almond Leadership?
A. I enjoy meeting the new class and learning more about the expansive opportunities in the almond industry. The ALP is a big commitment and opportunity for classmates and being a resource to help guide them on the journey is very fulfilling. I enjoy being able to connect with other mentors and discuss various strategies we use to improve and strengthen the almond industry.

Q. What is your favorite memory during your time as a mentor?
A. I enjoy attending the sessions and watching the group learn about a facet of the almond industry they had not previously known. One of my favorite times has been the Burchell nursery tour where minds are blown by the process of nurturing a new almond tree.

Q. What advice do you have for (young) almond leaders?
A. Listen and absorb as much as you can from the veterans. Recognize that your current knowledge is strong, but leaving your mind open to grow and learn from others is invaluable in your success in almond production and career development. Grow your network, the ALP is a perfect vessel for the expansion of your network and your contribution to others as well.

Q. How do you like to eat almonds?
A. I mix raw almonds into my daily protein shake.
